Blood and Roses

Blood and Roses: One Family’s Struggle and Triumph During the Tumultuous Wars of the Roses

by Helen Castor

The Paston family belonged to the medieval middle-class, halfway between the great landowners and the poor peasants. Beginning in the 1300s, the family wrote extensive collections of letters on all topics, from civil law to household management to politics, marriage and siege warfare. The family survived England’s civil wars–with difficulty–and their letters still exist. Helen Castor weaves excerpts from the letters into this narrative of the Pastons’ experiences.
